10) Katong Antique house

Katong Antique House
Visit the Katong Antique House and browse through the Peranakan artifacts on display.

Unfortunately, the Katong Antique house was closed on the day of our visit. Thus, we stayed outside the house. Instead of getting a Peranakan decor as what I've expected, the decor of the house's exterior is very similar to what I will expect of a place with Chinese culture. There are two Chinese lanterns hung outside the doors from the ceiling. The name of the antique house in Chinese characters and English words were nicely carved. The fonts are also painted gold. We have always thought that Peranakan culture is the hybrid of Chinese and Malay culture; hence, we didn't expect to see independently Chinese culture or solely Malay culture in a Peranakan heritage area but we learnt something new on that day.

Upon further research, we found out that visits to the Antique house was by appointment only and not 1130 hrs to 1630 hrs as stated in Singapore Tourism Board website. However, we found that it functioned as both a museum and a shop and is owned by a 4th generation Baba Peranakan named Peter Wee.
